SMITHFIELD IS HOME TO A GREAT MIX OF PEOPLE FROM WORKERS AT BARTS AND TRADERS AT THE 800 YEAR OLD MEAT MARKET TO THE BAR AND CLUB SET.

Since the late 1990s Smithfield has attracted a growing number of bars, pubs and clubs. Nightclubs such as Fabric and Turnmills pioneer the dance scene. On weekdays the nightlife consists of workers based in nearby Holborn, Clerkenwell and the City. At weekends the nightclubs and bars attract people from further afield.

THE MEAT TRADERS STARTING WORK AT 4.00AM SIT AND DRINK COFFEE AS CLUBBERS MAKE THEIR WAY HOME…

This 24 hour staffed Public Convenience contains a taxi office and coffee kiosk serving bacon and sausage sandwiches (the meat is sourced from the local market). There is a welcoming, extended plaza with street furniture where people can wait and chat. The site uses extruded ply boxes set on a regular grid to create a formal façade which also incorporates street furniture, and are fixed to the loadbearing floors and walls of the existing structure. The façade demonstrates the operational elements housed in the site.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS RUB SHOULDERS WITH OLD EASTENDERS IN AN AREA THAT BOASTS A PARK, ESTABLISHED ART SCENE AND ORGANIC MARKET.

Once a neglected corner of East London, London Fields has evolved to emerge as a district with its own character. Broadway Market nearby boasts a wide selection of boutiques, pubs and cafes and a highly successful Saturday market. £2.5 million has been invested into the area including the restoration of the London Fields Lido (London’s first heated Olympic sized outdoor pool).

These male and female toilets change to meet the needs of day and nighttime audiences. By day London Fields PC offers a kiosk selling newspapers, coffees and fresh croissants, a bicycle repair station, allotment exchange and a place where you can hire picnic equipment, hammock and deckchairs. At night the space is illuminated and offers cinema screenings, dance, music and performance events. The existing building at London Fields is enveloped in an oakframed translucent polycarbonate cube to create an illuminated beacon in the park at night
