THE IDEA

OUR IDEA IS TO ENCOURAGE COUNTRY- WIDE REGENERATION BY BRINGING PUBLIC CONVENIENCES BACK TO LIFE. THE BRITISH PUBLIC TOILET WAS ONCE A GRAND INSTITUTION, THE ENVY OF THE WORLD. TODAY THERE IS ONLY ONE TOILET PER 10,000 PEOPLE AND PCs ARE PERCEIVED AS UNSAFE, UNCLEAN AND UNDESIRABLE.
WITH LOCATIONS AT BUSY INTERSECTIONS (IN FACT PUBLIC PLACES) AND AUDIENCES THAT INCLUDE US ALL, THE PUBLIC TOILET IS A SPACE WAITING TO BE REBRANDED AND REVITALIZED… YET MOST LIE DERELICT.
Everybody needs a place to go, and not just any old place but somewhere that contributes dynamically to its environment. Working with local people, planners, designers, architects and retailers, PUBLIC CONVENIENCE is looking at how public toilets can be transformed into vibrant, meaningful spaces.

A VISIT TO A PUBLIC CONVENIENCE CAN BECOME AN ENDURANCE TEST WITH DUBIOUS CLEANLINESS, A DEARTH OF TOILET ROLL AND SOAP, BROKEN HAND DRYERS AND LOCKS. THE PUBLIC CONVENIENCE PROJECT AIMS TO TRANSFORM EACH SPACE INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY.
For women, older people, disabled people and visitors, the lack of appropriate facilities represents more than just a simple inconvenience. Safety is obviously a key issue for everyone while older people and disabled people are reluctant to leave their homes without the assurance of access to adequate public toilets.

WE ARE TALKING MORE THAN JUST PRETTIFYING PCS. GOOD TOILET PROVISION HAS BEEN SHOWN TO INCREASE RETAIL TURNOVER, TOURIST NUMBERS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH.
The Public Convenience project spans across many disciplines, from improving signage, the public convenience infrastructure and communications to redesigning or restoring the existing architecture using new, sustainable materials and presenting a format for change in city and urban environments. Working with architects Studio iii, we looked at how we could transform two public toilets sites in two London sites: London Fields and Smithfield.
